Inventory app

Inventory happens in front of the shelf. The app should be there too.

An inventory app is most useful when it moves the update closer to the place where stock changes. On a phone, someone can find a product, scan its code, remove a quantity or confirm a physical count without returning to a computer or writing a note to copy later.

01

Mobile by workflow

Responsive design alone is not enough. Frequent actions need to work with one hand, large controls and very few steps. If removing one unit opens three screens, the team will naturally choose human memory, an old technology whose reliability testing remains somewhat disappointing.

The same application should remain clear on a larger screen. Mobile is ideal for the action on the floor, while a computer is often more comfortable for importing a catalogue, reviewing many products or preparing a purchase.

02

Scan to remove a step

A phone camera can turn a barcode into a shortcut to the product record. This matters when references have similar names or when the user is standing in front of a bin and does not know the exact catalogue label.

Scanning does not replace inventory structure. It should point to the same quantity, movement history and thresholds as ordinary search. Otherwise the team maintains two inventories, an impressive achievement with very little practical demand.

03

Share immediately

A shared app removes the sequence of photo, message, note and later correction. When a movement is recorded, the new quantity becomes visible to everybody else. The person purchasing no longer needs to ask who opened the last box.

Speed does not mean anonymous or incomprehensible changes. Movements should at least preserve their type and date, while physical counts should create explicit corrections instead of silently replacing the number.

04

Choose the right depth

A small team rarely needs warehouse routes, manufacturing orders and specialist terminals on a phone. It usually needs products that are fast to find, reliable quantities, useful alerts and perhaps a consumption estimate to prepare purchases.

If the main requirement is tracking unique assets with photos, loans and serial numbers, a visual product such as Sortly may fit better. If inventory needs to drive a broad commercial suite, Zoho or Odoo cover a much larger scope.
